Let me begin by thanking Fad Bin Zack and Aishah Ahmad for recommending this movie. Thank you so much.

I was always skeptical on Bollywood movies, especially the ones with a title like "PK". They'll be nothing but kitsch songs and emotion fest. PK didn't prove me wrong. However, the film dares to discuss the highest level of philosophy as Dr. Normala Othman once said: religion.

What's so great about the movie you may ask. Well, I believe that film is a powerful medium that can be used to reach out to people. Discussing religion openly is often seen as tedious and might even be a taboo. The movie has successfully raise awareness on the concept of divinity i.e God and social issues in a necessary melodramatic way. All the tawdry stereotypical elements in Bollywood movies are needed so that the public are able to think about the matter in a laid-back way.

I have always wanting to spread dakwah in films but I fear that I will write something which is too heavy and too scholarly for a person to watch in pleasure. Whoever came out with the idea for this movie is a genius as the amount of issues discussed is huge and that is not even an exaggeration. Every single scene is important and needed to get through to the people. Regardless of the cinematography, acting and original score, the content of the movie is amazing and I am not ashamed to say that this would be the best film I've watched my entire life. Congratulations and thank you.
Only when Eminem came with his Marshall Matters LP that I started to think that rap is a cool kind of music. So I bought the tape and another uncensored one so that I could hear all the explicit words. I love every single song in it. After that I started to listen to every single rap that are famous during those days; Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Redman, etc.

<a onblur="try alt="" border="0" />

So the days of gangsta rap are over. I've moved to all sorts of other music genres. Rap is still around, but it wasn't my real interest (not trying to say that my real interest is now rap). It's not when I heard of the name Lupe Fiasco by a friend who introduced me to the song "Superstar". It didn't quite impress me, but it is a nice song, hearing it for the first time.

When LASERS came, I started to listen to the album. Just like any other album, you'd listen and love a few of the songs first ... in the end you'll love every single track. I started to learn what rap is about. I found out that rap is a form of poetry, and coming from a literary background I agree to a certain extent that songs can be poetry.

You see, to me (as someone who recently love poetic stuff) poetry is a form art using language. Thus to have it as an art, it requires something to make it beautiful. Just as paintings requires good colours, brushes, creativity, etc, poetry requires the right set of words, sounds, imagery, etc. Thus, the same goes with the lyric of a song.

I'm not saying that Lupe Fiasco's song are like Shakespeare's sonnets because that is too far apart. Shakespeare's sonnets are beautifully crafted. Rap (I'm referring to good rap), to me is beautiful because it usually rhymes and the choice of words used are just great.

While most commercial rappers are talking about dancing, partying, drinking, girls, sex, etc, Lupe being someone who go against establishments, raps about society, war, environments and other forms of awareness. It is really rare to hear a mainstream artist, especially from the US going against the occupation on Palestine by Israel.

After listening to Lupe, I got a whole new perception of rap. Sumpah kalo korang saman aku time tu, aku akan ungkitkan pasal puntung rokok yang ada dalam pondok tersebut.

Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-84313256204785111172010-03-26T15:31:00.000-07:002010-03-30T21:38:39.696-07:00Brothers (2009) -may contain spoilers-

IMDB rating : 7.4/10

A great movie about brotherhood, family and war. I think these kinds of quality movies about war just show how Americans hate war. Even though there are scenes that make people from Afghanistan look bad, but that's how it is; how American see them, how children are taught. The part in Afghanistan may seem ... bad; I think the intention is to show how cruel war can be. Tobey Macguire & Jake Gyllenhaal are great, and not to forget Natalie Portman who is more matured now having to act as a mother.

Tommy
"You're my brother. The term is quite new and it has not been define by anyone yet (I believe so). If we were to search in the open based Encyclopedia (Wikipedia), the term Colorism is still under discussion and most of the articles were not correctly cited (not to mention it falls under "extremely poor article").

Discrimination among human beings in accordance with their skin colour can be seen in America when they are on their way to accept the African as American. During that period the Americans who are fair/pale skinned (Anglo) stands as the majority and the ruling power of America. The Africans who are dark skinned were of course treated differently for being a different race, classes, etc.

In addition to the discrimination of race, dark-skinned people were discriminated with the tone colour of their skin. Meaning to say that the darker you are the more discrimination you will get. They point this as the "Brown Paper Bag Test", where they will use the colour of the brown paper bag as an indication of your skin colour complexion. Those who are darker than the paper bag will not able to attend the party or any other social events that uses this kind of test during that period. Previously in Wikipedia, it also mentions about the test being done to enter the Harvard University, but that part of the article have been removed.

Even in other countries, as a result of the colonization of the Anglo white-skinned people, fair/pale/white-skinned people are being look upon and were seen as more beautiful than those who are darker. This can be seen in my own country Malaysia, India, etc. As a result, beauty product that will make your skin fairer were created and sold to make our skin fairer and "beautiful".

(my opinion) I think Colourism does not only applies to dark-skinned people because of the Black Albino cases in Africa. Albinos in Africa were hunted and killed as they said that their body parts are very valuable in witchcraft. They were also seen as bringers of bad luck in their community.

I hope that the there will be more research in the study of Colourism. I am looking into the possibility about the view of the "colour" itself in relation with the colour of the skin; does the view that light/fair/white imagery is positive and dark/black imagery is negative (for example we have a hero that dresses in white and a villain in black) can reflect to the colour of the skin.

I will also try to look upon this matter in the Islamic point of view. Findings will be posted in the next post.Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-13973173925276667442010-01-03T17:41:00.000-08:002010-03-30T21:42:05.412-07:00Muallaf

Assalamualaikum ...

The last post about the movie Muallaf is actually a contest, where I have to post something about the movie to get passes to watch the "Grand Premiere" of it in Malaysia (haha). Yes I did got the passes (4) ; Sapick, xLANx, Fader Mariano and me had a good time watching it (it's free).

The movie is good with lots of things to think about, especially about religion. It is rated certificate 18PL, for its contents being unsuitable for those who are not matured enough. I agree with the rate, but I do not understand why it should be banned.

There's no big issue to be controversial. The movie does not promote religious pluralism as some claims it to be. The masturbating scene was totally harmless (there may not be even such a scene if one would view it).

My friend said that maybe the reason why the movie is banned in Malaysia is because of the statement Rohani (Sharifah Amani) said about why alcohol are not banned in the country since it only brings bad things. Politic wise, the statement may offend the government.

Overall it's nice to buy the DVD as a collection. I like TaleNTime better.

p/s: tak sempat nak amik gambar dengan Sharifah Amani.

Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-23448142563057639882009-12-13T23:25:00.000-08:002010-03-30T21:42:05.413-07:00Muallaf (2008 or 2009?)
Bismillahirahmanirahim
In the name of God, the most Gracious and most Merciful

Yasmin Ahmad's Muallaf premieres in Malaysian screen in 2009

After one year of waiting, after hearing stuff about the movie, finally Muallaf will be premiering in Malaysian screens on 24th December 2009. The movie had already premiered in Singapore more than a year ago (27th November 2008). I have doubt whether this is actually a Malaysian or Singaporean made movie (actually the movie involves both MHZ Film from M'sia & The Picturehouse from S'pore)

I don't know how the movie manage to be screening in Malaysia after failing to pass the Malaysian censorship authorities. I heard that there is a masturbating scene in the movie (maybe some sex education from our dear Yasmin Ahmad). I hope that Yasmin's fifth movie will be as great as the others. And Sharifah Amani, don't fail me... huhu ....

p/s: the next post will be the review of the movie.

Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-27331549684606842242009-12-13T18:36:00.000-08:002010-03-30T21:42:20.246-07:00Mackinac (MAK-in-aw) Island and horses is a better place.Peace be upon awak~!

Mackinac Island

This is my ideal place to live. Mackinac (pronounced as Mackinaw) Island situated in the islands of Michigan U.S.A is a popular tourist attraction.

The best thing about this island is that it bans all kinds of motor vehicles except for the ones that are really needed (snowmobiles during winter, service vehicles and emergency vehicles). The island's occupants uses horses and bicycles as the main form of transportation.

I have discussed with my dad about making the world a better place by replacing cars and other motors vehicles with horses, but my dad said that it's not possible because the cost of having a horse is much more expensive than a car. Buying a horse is costly enough, maintaining, caring, etc bills is another thing.

I still believe that having horses are better than cars. Yes it is costly to have (buy) a horse nowadays. It's just because the production of horses are less than cars which makes horses more rare. When it's rare, the things to maintain it will also be rare, so does the production of it. When things are rare they'll become expensive, so does things like the spare-parts of a Ford car in Malaysia or the spare-parts of other mega expensive cars.

Somehow we just need to start to use horses again. We just have to start using it step by step. It will be very costly at the beginning, but when horses are produced in a large number (I'm not stating that horses are produce like machinery huhu) it will be affordable to us in the future.

I'm not against motor vehicles in all as some of it are really in need of use such as the ambulance, heavyweights lorries, etc. But having to cut most of the normal motor vehicles will indeed save the earth.

Go green.

Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-45510797688482713802009-10-09T17:11:00.000-07:002010-03-30T21:42:30.748-07:00Taxi-ani (two Taxis)
Here's a story about two different taxi drivers that I've encounter with. I'll try to write it as a play.

------------

Boy, Man, Malay Taxi Driver (M.T.D), Chinese Taxi Driver (C.T.D)

A teenage boy, standing and waiting for a taxi to town. Came one; a Malay driver in his 30s. The boy enters.

Boy : Bandar ya

M.T.D : Okay.

The trip is not far. Silence accompanies them as they went on the road to reach the destination. The fee is RM1.

Boy: (opens up his wallet, hands the driver a RM5 note) Nah ...

M.T.D : (looks for change) Isshh ... takde duit pecah la (looks again)

Boy : (looks again in his wallet, trying to find coins as substitute) Takde gak ni ... camane ya?

M.T.D : (still looking for change while putting on a thinking face) Kire halal la ek? takde duit pecah ni (smiles)

Boy : (blurs) Ah ... Okay ... (exits the taxi)

M.T.D : (drives away)

(Time move slowly)

Boy (monologue) : Celaka betol ... kena rembat duit aku ... senang betul aku kne tipu ... baik sangat ke aku ni? macam sial rembat duit orang macam tu ... celaka.

Lights off
Lights on

A man walking towards a long queue of taxi. He stops at the one in front of a Chinese driver ones looking in his 50s. He opens the door passenger's seat door. It won't open.

C.T.D : (points towards the backseat)

Man : (opens up the backseat) Wangsa Walk?

C.T.D : Siffllas sd (slurs)
Man : (enters taxi) Mende tadi?

C.T.D : Sila masuk (pushes the meter button on)

Man : Wangsa Walk ya ... Brape ringgit ah?

C.T.D : Tak jauh pun ... lima ringgit pun tak makan.

Destination reached. The meter indicates that it's RM3.80. Two Malay boy is looking towards the taxi outside of it.

Man : (opens his wallet, he only have two RM1 notes and a RM50 note) Takde pecah la ... (hands the driver a Rm50 note)

C.TD : Aiyooh ... takde pecah la (check in his pocket and counts his money for change) tak cukup laa ... (checks again)

Man : (checks his wallet and bag for any possible changes that can be use) ... takde duit kecik la ... camane ya?

C.T.D : takpela (smiles) bagi je dua ringgit ...

Man : isshh ... mana boleh camtu (looks around if there's any shops for change, there ain't any)

C.T.D : takpe, takpe ... saya drive jauh boleh dapat passenger lagi ...

Man : Betol ke ni? Minta maaf sangat-sangat (shakes hands with the driver)
C.T.D : betol ... takpe-takpe ...

The two boys standing outside comes closer to the taxi and signalling the taxi driver for a ride.

C.T.D : haa tengok suda ade passenger ... tak rugi pun ... (smiles)

Man : Terima kasih banyak-banyak ya ... minta maaf skali lagi ... (exits the taxi smiling)

Lights off

-----------

That's the story of my experience taxi riding with two different kind of driver that I'd value the memories. To be honest, I'm quite ashame with the Malay driver as a Malay myself. I always thought that Chinese would be stingy on money (I know it's prejudice). because of this I will never again view people in stereotypes.

For the Chinese Taxi Driver, I really thank you for your hospitality and generosity. Even though it's just 10 minutes ride, I will remember it for the rest of my life.

As for the Malay Taxi Driver, I don't like the way you treat me, but I do thank you for the experience you gave me because it has made me a different person. Thank you.

May God bless you both.

p/s: I would love to take a ride in Robert de Niro's taxi. It's been 3 years and with "Uprising", they
signal the release of their comeback album titled "The Resistance". The
band's latest album will be released on September 7

Speaking of the song, it's intro is kind of an interlude as it started
almost a minute into the 5-minute new summer anthem. The effortless
rhythmical arrangement of synthesizers in the beginning of the song is
brilliant. Besides of the infectious "come-on" chants in the
background, there's nothing that "new" in the track. It is still the
same Muse we knew since the early 2000s. The spike and attitude is
still there, and I'm quite envisioning the video to the song. It's
something like a <span4727184>fusion</span4727184> of U2 and <span4727184>Keane</span4727184>, which is quite positive

In conclusion, it's 5-minute combination of a much efforted ingenuity
from one of the greatest <span4727184>bands</span4727184> of the 21st century

Catch the single when it comes out on September 7, 2009. The group has
been also confirmed of a stint at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

(taken from a website)Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-66878233430785980972009-09-12T03:05:00.001-07:002010-03-30T21:43:03.417-07:00Danger of Lying
I fell off(tq xLANx) a motorcycle at Greenwood once, riding with my friend. So why are there still sins committed if Satan is actually locked up or chained in the month of Ramadan.

I've asked this question in an IRK (Islamic Revealed Knowledge) class during my undergraduate studies. The lecturer said that we should not take the Hadith literally. By that she means that the Satans are not actually or literally chained but were chained due to our religious deeds (Amal) ; fasting, sunat terawikh ,etc.

I do 100% agree with her explanations. I agree with her that the Satans are not literally chained. Why do we still have sinners in the month of Ramadan if they are actually locked up.

It is our job to lock them up. I prefer to chain them because it sounds cooler (nonsense hehe).

p/s: when I refer to Satan it would include devils, ghosts, djinns, etc.

Selamat Berpuasa, Happy Fasting.

May Allah S.W.T be with you. They were young and they asked about whether they are old enough to marry.

My dad's response is "if you find classic musics as to be good to your ears, that means that you're matured enough".

I do agree with my dad's statement and even though it might not be 100% true, it does reflect your maturity in a way.

As for the music, those singers and musicians would tend to produce music that reflect their age and maturity. Look at Lady Gaga and Dave Matthews Band.

I would say that I'm not that matured as I do love 3OH!3 but I also love Elvis Presley (Suspicious Mind).

p/s: I'm envious of my friends who are getting married.Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-16709414663619613632009-07-17T22:10:00.000-07:002010-03-30T21:38:39.698-07:00The Exorcist (1973) Never Trust The Devil (part 2)Assalamualaikum wbt.

It has been a while since the last time I posted something. ( especially for Willisena and Syaiful)

Assalamualaikum...

I know I haven't updated my blog for quite a while. I'm so sorry because I just want to inform my friends about my missing hand phone.

Here's a post about my kampung life. This post is especially for my dear friend sister Willisena and her dear husband Syaiful.

I went back home last Tuesday and I had to borrow my dad's digital camera to take the pictures because I lost my camera phone.

It's the fruit season, at home we have lots of seasonal fruits. Here's the Rambutan.
Here's another Rambutan tree.

Here's a picture of the Durian tree from below. (There's some Jali pics in the phone that I haven't uploaded to the PC yet)

Today, I just lost my Sony Ericsson (k810i) phone. It was there beside me at 6am (I read messages by Kak Lis & Bawang) then I went back to sleep. At 9am it's not there anymore.

Here's a story about my friend who lost her phone maybe two years ago.

The kind of phone that my friend lost.

(setting Mahallah/College Halimah in IIUM)
She went to the toilet for a while, she left her phone at her room and when she came back it was not there anymore. So she called me asking what to do... I told her to pray to Allah S.W.T and report it to the office.

So, she report her missing phone to the office. At that point of time I was on my way back from Kuantan to IIUM (UIA). I was on the bus. There's nothing that I can do to help her at that point of time, so I just pray to Allah S.W.T hoping that something good will happen and that she could find her phone.

After an hour or two after she called me telling about her missing phone she called back, but this time she managed to find her phone. The office conducted a spot-check to find the phone (I don't know covering what area) and eventually they found it in the toilet. Deep in my heart I feel that my prayers somehow did help her in a way.

The point that I want say is that if things like this happens to you, you should never stop hoping and never forget to ask help from Allah S.W.T.

I wish that I can have my phone back. I don't want to wish that those who took my phone would rot in hell because I think it's a bad thing to wish for. Maybe this is a punishment to me for things that I've done. Maybe it's a reminder for me to take care of my things better (lesson learned).

I feel indifferent.

I hope you guys can help me pray that things will get better. Amin. Just pray the best for me. Amin. The best for you too.
Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4084954384548492003.post-28970240857689437682009-06-14T02:33:00.001-07:002010-03-30T21:38:39.698-07:00The Exorcist (1973) Never Trust The Devil (part 1)Here's some great quotes from the movie The Exorcist (1973). He was abandoned by his family (the chicken pack). So as an exile from his pack(family) he went to our kitchen's doorstep for food. It was a pity seeing a little chick being all alone, so we took care of it by giving him bits of rice, etc for him.

Here's where Jali would crave for food when he was a chick.

As times goes on, Jali grew bigger and stronger. Whilst others (chicken) were being slaughtered on Aidilfitri, Aidiladha and other occasions, Jali were still being fed at our doorstep. Yet at that time he is still alone with us feeding bits. He also turn out to be so gentle with us, as you can lift him up and pat his head.

I cared less about Jali because ... who would care about a homeless chicken?.

The one eyed General. This is not Jali.

It's not until I returned home from UIA one day that I found out that he grew so large. In addition to that he is also now like the leader of the whole hens (the lady Chicken). It was common for a Cock/Rooster (adult male chicken ehem2) to lead a couple of the hens as their own, just like what the lion did to the lioness. At the time when Jali was small there would be a few roosters who'd lead their hens. Jali on the other hand is different...

The Supreme Ruler of our Hens, Jali the Great. Look at how big he is compared to the others.

Jali is now like a supreme ruler of the hens at our house. I just love both of it book because I would say that they are different. To those who just watch the movie version here's what I could find out what you miss :

This brand appears on the body of Vetra's father like the other killing.

This brand is what appears on the Camerlengo's chest. The Illuminati Diamond.

1. The first one to be killed was not Vetra's friend but her father Leonardo Vetra. Replaced by her friend Silvano.

2. Robert Langdon receives a phone call from his home and flew to CERN to look at the Leonardo Vetra's body and met with Vittoria Vetra there.

3. Langdon and Vetra flew to Vatican City by a shuttle-looking airplane that goes with the speed of Mach 11.

4. The director of CERN, Maximilian Kohler was removed. He was the one who got killed in the end accuse by the Camerlengo to brand him.

5. There are 2 reporters from BBC in the book that did not appear in the movie. We could see a lot of reporters from various TV stations around the glob but there is none from BBC which contrast with what is told on the book where it only focuses on BBC. These reporters communicated with the the so-called Illuminati leader.

6. The forth Preferiti is killed in the fountain but were saved and name Pope in the movie.

7. The Camerlengo and the previous Pope were actually blood related which what cause the Camerlengo to act immorally and commit suicide upon noticing it. This is the best part because a Pope is mistakenly seen as going against his celibacy but actually did a 'test-tube baby'. This is seriously challenging religion. Damn it.

8. Vetra was actually wearing shorts in Vatican which is actually prohibitted there for women there.

9. Langdon went together with Camerlengo in the last helicopter scene. Camerlengo survived with a parachute on a building and Langdon fall into water near an island.

10. In the movie when Langdon was asked by the Camerlengo about God, he answered that he was not ready about faith. In the novel Langdon answered that he ain't ready to believe in God because he cannot accept afford to accept that a God would punish those who did not follow His teaching.

There are lots of other thing which is different and removed and added in the movie. It won't be a waste if you read the book after you watch the movie.

Overall I sense that bot the movie and novel were really challenging religion as it plays with it a lot. Even though it does not involve Islam (there may be some things about Islam), the story challenges readers about the idea of "God" and divinity. Readers should take everything critically and be careful for anything that involves religion on philosophy.

Still the book is really good.

Looking forward for the next Robert Langdon adventure "The Lost Symbol" that will be released on September 15, 2009.Sokathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08777154287345578620noreply@blogger.com2
